ABSTRACT

Lelo, S., & Vesnić, A. Current taxonomic position of Bosnia-Herzegovinian members of genus Phengaris Doherty, 1891, with reference to Maculinea van Eecke, 1915 (Lepidoptera, Lycaenidae). Current biosystematic position of Bosnia-Herzegovinian species of genus Phengaris Doherty, 1891 is presented in this paper. Also, the change of earlier synonym Maculinea van Eecke, 1915 to Phengaris Doherty, 1891 is explained. Ph. rebeli Hirschke, 1904 was removed from Bosnia-Herzegovinian checklist based on certain new taxonomic data but Ph. arion (Linnaeus, 1758) and Ph. alcon (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775) remained on the list established by Fric et al. in 2007.

Key words: Lepidoptera, butterflies, Lycaenidae, Phengaris, Maculinea

SUMMARY

V. Apfelbeck provided original data regarding to genus Phengaris in Bosnia and Herzegovina (Apfelbeck, 1892). V. Apfelbek and H. Rebel listed two species of Phengaris Doherty, 1891, Ph. arion (Linnaeus, 1758) and Ph. alcon (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775) however, those were listed as members of genus Lycaena Fabricius, 1807 (Apfelbeck, 1892; Rebel, 1904). Also, these species were listed within genus Maculinea van Eecke, 1915 by R. Sijarić (Sijarić, 1966; 1980) and P. Jakšić (Jakšić, 1988). S. Lelo lists taxon “rebeli” as the third species within genus Phengaris Doherty in Bosnia and Herzegovina (Lelo, 2000, 2004, 2007, 2008). However, on recommendation by a reviewer, in his monograph of butterflies of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the author harmonized all the data for taxa “alcon” and “rebeli” (Lelo, 2008). In their extensive contemporary research of myremecophilic blues of Europe and Asia, Fric et al. confirmed that taxon Maculinea van Eecke, 1915 was the junior synonym (sin. nov.) of taxon Phengaris Doherty, 1891 and that taxa “alcon” and “rebeli” were also synonyms (Fric et al., 2007).
