ABSTRACT

Vesnić, A., & Lelo, S. First record of Camponotus fallax (Nylander, 1856) in myrmecofauna of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The paper presents the first record of Camponotus fallax (Nylander, 1856) in Bosnia and Herzegovina. One find is from Sarajevo, Vilsonovo šetalište and two finds are from Vareš and they confirm occurrence of a new species belonging to genus Camponotus Mayr, 1861 which increases number of species recorded genus Camponotus Mayr to eight.

Key words: ants, Formicidae, Camponotus, fallax, Bosnia and Herzegovina

SUMMARY

The first checklist of ants of Bosnia and Herzegovina, dating back to 1898 (Wasmann, 1898) lists four subfamilies, eight genera and eleven species of ants. It is interesting to mention that the first Bosnian-Herzegovinian checklist contains no data on any of the species belonging to genus Camponotus Mayr, 1861, despite the fact that this is a genus with the largest worker caste body size. Number of papers on ants of Bosnia and Herzegovina is very modest. Significant contribution to the furthering of the knowledge on ants of Bosnia and Herzegovina is made by an edited report on myrmecofauna of forest ecosystems (Georgijević, 1974). “Society for inventarisation and protection of animals” from Ilijaš made an even greater contribution to faunistic research of ants of Bosnia and Herzegovina through publication of Fauna of Bosnia and Herzegovina for five years running. Updated, corrected and amended checklist of ants of Bosnia and Herzegovina (Lelo & Vesnić, 2009) encompasses data on seven species of genus Camponotus Mayr, 1861. However, number of species belongings to genus Camponotus Mayr is still low considering that faunistic checklists of neighbouring countries contain data on fifteen species from genus Camponotus Mayr (Karaman, 2004; Petrov, 2004; Bračko, 2000, 2006, 2007; Vesnić & Lelo, 2009). Specimens from the worker caste were originally collected in Sarajevo, Vilsonovo šetalište on 22 April 2009. Nest of species Camponotus fallax (Nylander) was uncovered in a dried out part of a lime tree (Tilia sp.). Afterwards, the author collected specimens of the Camponotus fallax (Nylander) worker caste in Vareš, near village Selišta and in Vareš itself, on 11 and 12 June 2010. Occurrence of Camponotus fallax (Nylander) was expected for the area of Bosnia and Herzegovina as the species had been recorded in the neighbouring countries.

This new find represents a significant contribution to poorly research myrmecofauna of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the number of species from genus Camponotus Mayr in Bosnia and Herzegovina has increased to eight.
