ABSTRACT

Lelo, S., Stojanović, D., & Vesnić, A. Purple-banded Wave, Idaea ostrinaria (Hübner, 1813) (Lepidoptera: Geometridae, Sterrhinae), new species in lepidopteraean fauna of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Generally, in Bosnia and Herzegovina exists a low interest for moths and butterflies investigations. In this paper we present the first finding of Purple- banded Wave, Idaea ostrinaria (Hübner, 1813) in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Also, the other Bosnian and Herzegovinian species of the genus Idaea Treitschke, 1825 has been discussed.

SUMMARY

There are evidences of continuing research of butterfly fauna in Bosnia and Herzegovina from the first half of 19th century until today. Also, there are evidences that butterfly fauna of Bosnia and Herzegovina was consisted of 1.631 species. Within lepidopteraean fauna of Bosnia and Herzegovina, 305 species of superfamily Geometroidea Leach, 1815 was identified, of which 285 are within family Geometridae Leach, 1815.

According to the literature the genus Idaea Treitschke, 1825 from family Geometridae Leach, 1815 in Bosnia and Herzegovina is represented with 28 species. Idea ostrinaria Hübner represents 29th species of genus Idaea Treitschke in Bosnia and Herzegovina and in „Revision of Rebel’s butterfly list of Bosnia and Herzegovina” (author: S. Lelo) is after species I. trigeminata Haworth under ordinal 1.062.

Genus Idaea Treitschke, 1825 is very widely distributed on Earth with more than 1.200 described species, of which 127 are known in almost all parts of Europe (except few islands). H. Rebel, in his list of butterflies of Bosnia and Herzegovina, presented 28 species of genus Acidalia Hübner, 1819, which are today treated as genus Idaea Treitschke, 1825, but there is no species Idea ostrinaria (Hübner, 1813) among them. This species is characterized by an average wing length of 10-12 mm or a wingspan of about 2,5 cm. Members of this species appear from May to July in the Mediterranean, warm and dry areas at lower elevation. Caterpillars develop on plants of the genus Thymus and Calluna.
