SUMMARY
Amphibian research in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and on Mt. Prenj conducted over the past 110 years had resulted in relatively vast knowledge of amphibian fauna. There are 18 species of amphibians in total in Bosnia and Herzegovina, appertaining to order Anura and order Caudata (Lelo, 2007).
Species in order Caudata (Scopoli, 1777) belong to only one suborder (Salamandroidei Müller, 1831) and one superfamily (Salamandroidea Cope, 1890), but two families (Proteidae Gray, 1825 and Salamandridae Goldfuss, 1820) with five genera and seven species. Order Anura (Rafinesque, 1815) is represented with three suborders (Discoglossoidei Sokol, 1977; Mesobatrachia Laurenti, 1979; Neobatrachi Reig, 1958), four superfamilies (Discoglossidae Günther, 1858; Pelobatoidea Bonaparte, 1850; Hyloidea Rafinesque, 1815; and Ranoidea Rafinesque, 1814), five families (Discoglossidae Günther, 1858; Pelobatidae Bonaparte, 1850; Bufonidae Gray, 1825; Hylidae Rafinesque, 1815; and Ranidae Rafinesque, 1814), seven genera and 11 species (Lelo, 2007).
The research was conducted from June to August 2008. Field survey of Mt. Prenj, resulted in recovery of four species of amphibians. These species were identified and then released back into the wild. There was no need for catching a certain number of individuals as they could easily be identified without it.
Data collected in the field was compared with data from different literature sources (Bolkay, 1924; Đurović, 1986.-1987; Đurović, 1980; Lelo et. al., 2008; Mikšić, 1969; Werner, 1904; Werner, 1898). All the literature was obtained from the Archives of the National museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Sarajevo.
This paper, for the first time, gives scientific record and clearly establishes Bufo bufo Linnaeus as an inhabitant of Mt. Prenj. S. Lelo has found the droppings of Salamandra salamandra Linnaeus in the area surrounding Glavatićevo and this data also represents the first precise scientific record of this species on Mt. Prenj. Analysis of literature data has shown that four more species exist on Mt. Prenj, but they inhabit the lowest altitudes of this mountain.
The results given in this paper show that Mt. Prenj is inhabitated bz at least nine species of amphibians, almost 50% of all amphibians of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
