ABSTRACT

Vesnić, A., & Jugo, A. (2010). Contribution to the knowledge of the distribution of Formica rufibarbis Fabricius, 1793 (Insecta, Hymenoptera, Formicidae) species in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The paper presents previous records of Formica rufibarbis Fabricius, 1793 and a new record from the Gacko area. Along with the overview of the distribution of the species, analysis of the number of records and their biogeographical location was conducted, and it established that most of the records belong to the Alpine-High Nordic subregion.

Key words: Formica, rufibarbis, Bosnia and Herzegovina, taxonomy, ecology

SUMMARY

The first record of Formica rufibarbis Fabricius, 1793 relates back to the original scientific paper dealing with ant fauna of Bosnia and Herzegovina (Wasmann, 1898). The second and more extensive source of data on myrmecofauna is a report on forest insects which lists data on 57 ant species in Bosnia and Herzegovina (Georgijević, 1974). Current biosystematic checklist of ants of Bosnia and Herzegovina encompasses data on 74 species of ants, including genus Formica Linnaeus, 1758 (Vesnić & Lelo, 2010).

The new find of Formica rufibarbis Fabricius represents 16 individuals of the worker caste collected on 23 July 2010 in the area of Lipnik, municipality Gacko.

Based on the analysis of the literature data we can conclude that the species Formica rufibarbis Fabricius, 1793 most likely inhabits the whole of Bosnia and Herzegovina, while noting that most of the finds, 75% of them, are from the continental Bosnia and Herzegovina.
